Is it ever too soon for Halloween? I think not!
This paper pieced coffin template is free, along with other wonderful tutorials from Jeni Baker of In Color Order. I loved it and not knowing how to paper piece wasn't going to stop me ... with the help of YouTube, Google and a love of coffins ... viola!
I had saved a bag of scraps from my other Chillingsworth quilts (here). Made some 'fake' flying geese with half square triangles.
Every inch of border fabric was cobbled together. I ran out of the black background after two coffins which worked out fine because my paper piecing skills really need a proper class of instruction.
It's no secret I love Aurifil 50wt. for piecing and quilting. It melds into the minky I frequently use and I rarely get thread breaks or loads of lint. What I am having fun with is using brighter thread colors that make even my simple quilting look nice. On the front is hot neon orange #1104.
And on the back is black dimple dot minky quilted with Aurifil 50wt. #5004 (dark grey) in the bottom bobbin.
When I ran out of scraps the quilt was just too small, so I did cheat and buy a yard of Chillingsworth damask - but seriously, who can resist these tiny little skulls?
And here is the big reveal. Another "Frankenweenie" quilt whose criteria is to use up every last scrap of leftover fabric from other quilts.
Something new for me to do is link up with others - but I am pleased to join Scraptastic Tuesday hosted by She Can Quilt which I subscribe to and have enjoyed reading for some time. Lots of inspiration, tutorials and guidance ... a great site to check out.

This collection seemed overwhelming with 28 fat quarters and a huge panel - but just chomping through all this beautiful fabric with little quilts was totally the solution.

The basis of this quilt started with Amy Gibson's great tutorial To The Point from her web site: Stitchery Dickory Dock - a simple pattern that has endless ways to assemble.
My fabric choice of Tasha Noel's Vintage Market was really not right for this pattern. The delicate designs got lost with all the white triangles. To the rescue was Amy Smart's idea of "snowballing" a triangle from her quilt "Scrap Bag Stars". This and more fun patterns are in the book Scraps, Inc. Vol. 2. All my blocks were trimmed to 5.75".
Now there are two patterns going on - the half square triangle made with a jelly roll (2.5" strips) and a fun diamond motif created with the strawberry fabric 'snowballs'. The white becomes an accent instead of the focal point.
Two scrappy blocks help fill in where I was short on fabric. One went in the top left corner, the other on the bottom right corner - nothing like balancing your scraps!
The backing is a solid deep blue made with Cotton Couture - a beautiful soft cotton from Michael Miller. This quilt is going to college so it is needs to hide dirt. Also, don't be afraid to use bold colors even when the quilt top is dainty. The contrast of a darker color can make prettier fabrics stand out even more.
To quilt I used a wavy line stitch following the seams in a bright pink: Aurifil 50wt. #2425 for the front, # 2740 blue for the back. This is my go to blue and it is very versatile.
I splurged on a Quarter Inch Seam Marker and only wish I had bought this little tool ages ago. Quick and accurate are the words that come to mind when marking seam lines using this rule.
This quilt is a perfect example of why it's good to mix and match different quilting techniques - what started out too bland became 'pretty in pink!"
