Mini Tumbler Scrap Quilt (#55)

I find making scrappy quilts harder to do since my stash is made up of many novelty and strong colored fabrics.  My scraps are left overs from making grocery bags for The Fabric Hog - and the tone of a market bag is so different than the softer prettier fabrics that are attractive in a quilt.
Luckily this one came out great since it harmonized and is a picnic blanket. Making box corners for my bags left me with lots of 4" squares which I could cut into mini tumblers with the 3.5" Accuquilt die.
I don't know why but my patience level was low with this quilt - so I took the easy short cut of adding scrap flannel and cotton borders to finish it off.
Finally - a rugged background of red cotton mixed with black, indigo and blue yarn dyed linen.  Quilted with Aurifil 50wt. Light Sand on the front and the fun variegated Storm At Sea on the back with wavy line stitches- this quilt will live with the Half Hexi Scrap Quilt in a school locker for lunchtime fun.

Materials:
Quilting cotton & flannel
Red Kona Dimensions / Robert Kaufman
Essex linen in black, blue denim, indigo / Robert Kaufman
Aurifil 50wt. Light Sand (#2000) & Variegated Storm at Sea (#4655)
Warm & White

Sweet As Honey Quilt (#35)

Sweet as Honey by Bonnie Christine is a beautiful collection of autumn hues that look so pretty in a random tumbler pattern.  20 fat quarters were cut using a 6.5" Accuquilt tumbler die - with left overs cut into small squares that filled out the sides.
Ironing and starching are a must since Art Gallery fabric is thinner and more delicate than most quilting cottons, so don't go too fast when you start sewing your pieces.
If you go too fast with those first stitches (mine were very small at 1.5) this thinner fabric can dip into the needle 'hole' and you end up with lots of really small stitches on top of each other - almost impossible to cut apart since the fabric is so fragile.
I tried a new combination of layering - cotton top / Warm & White batting / minky back.
I was worried that minky and batting would be too massive for this dainty cotton - but it wasn't.  There didn't seem to be much weight difference between using my usual flannel in the middle versus the Warm & White - and I kept the size modest with lap quilt dimensions.

(Note:  Warm & White/Natural seems thinner to me now than when I started quilting a few years ago.  Back then, a minky/batting combo seemed just too heavy.)
Quilting was a medium sized broken zig zag in Aurifil 50wt. Sand, following the tumbler shape and then down the middle from top to bottom.

Materials:
Sweet as Honey / Art Gallery
Warm & White batting
Aurifil  Sand 50wt.

Black & White Accuquilt Tumbler (#26)

10 different black and white fabrics were cut using the Accuquilt tumbler die and 'trapped' in a border of Kona jet black.

13 tumblers wide, and 12 rows long ... the backing is black dimple dot minky - and binding is Timeless Treasures Sketch black. A layer of JoAnn's bleached muslin is the middle layer between the quilted top & minky back.

Quilted with Gutermann's Sew all grey on top and black on the bottom, following the tumbler shape and going across the rows as well, using the large broken zig zag stitch.
The pictures don't exactly capture how black the fabrics are - but they are elegant and classic... like a LBD  (little black dress).

Gypsy Caravan Tumbler (#24)

A beautiful chic quilt featuring Amy Butler's Gypsy Caravan, cut with the large Accuquilt tumbler die.  12 tumblers across by 12 rows down with a 3" border on the sides in matching periwinkle.

Binding in periwinkle and backed with vanilla dimple dot minky.  The middle layer is JoAnn's bleached muslin, prewashed and all layers spray basted.  I usually pin and spray baste - but had success with spray basting only and ironing the layers together, pressing on the cotton top portion and totally avoiding the minkey - it melts!
Quilting was a smaller broken zig zag going across the rows and following the tumbler shapes from top to bottom.
I used Aurifil beige 50 wt. for both the top and bottom with a No. 12 universal needle and it was smooth  and consistent.

Sabby Chic Accuquilt Tumbler (#23)

The goal was to make a shabby chic quilt. Using different 6 fabric patterns, including Paris Flea market by 3 Sisters and Petal by Tany Whelan - this quilt is all that.
The photos don't capture  how well all these colors & tones meld and harmonize with the blush minkey dimple dot - which photographs like a salmon color - but in real life they look great together.

Using the Accuquilt large tumbler die, minkey back and muslin in the middle so you can't feel the seams - I quilted it using Gutermann pinks with the broken zig zag stitch following the tumbler shapes from top to bottom - and across the tumbler rows from side to side.

Skull Tumbler with Minky (#10)

5" tumbler (from Missouri Star Quilt) quilt made with Folklorica Skull cotton from David Textiles with Kona Jet Black.  Backed with dimple dot minky and Michael Miller Clown stripe in black & white.  16 rows across and 17 rows down - (total 272 tumblers cut)  quilted with Gutterman grey all sew on the front, aqua on the back, using #12 universal needle.

I bought 2 1/2 yards of each fabric - there were leftovers.
262" of binding - (6 1/2 cuts of strips @40" wide), plus 20" for tails.  So you have to buy about 20" of fabric (just over 1/2 yard) to go around the quilt.
53" wide x 75" long
The Tend the Earth (see below), same amount of tumblers - came out 55x76" - depends if your fabric stretches a little.

Tend the Earth Tumbler (#7)

Tend the Earth by Deb Strain (Moda) with Kona white and some stray lavender - using 5" tumbler template.
16 tumblers wide (54') by 17 tumblers rows (73.5")

By the bolt JoAnn's bleached 100% cotton muslin 60" wide was the inside layer - between a pieced cotton top - and Robert Kaufman's cozy cotton flannel.  A better feel than just with cotton top & flannel back.

Flannel back, muslin and fabric was pre-washed since they were all 1/2 yards to start.
The quilting lines followed the tumbler shape.  Gutterman sew all thread for the top and Isacord 40# 100% polyester white for bottom bobbin worked great with a walking foot.

Lantern Festival Tumbler (#3)

Tumbler quilt in Lantern Festival by Benartex, mixed with Curiosities by Nancy Holverson, Kate Spain (purple) & Moda Marble Swirls in robin egg blue.  (a quick scrapy quilt made for a little girl who loves Mulan)
Plastic tumbler template from the Missouri Star Quilt Company for 5" pre-cuts (charms). Tutorial here.

If using a directional fabric you have to lay out your un-cut squares first - and then cut them using the template to match them to the previous row.  Wide on top goes with wide on the bottom.
Quilted only with Robert Kaufman lilac flannel on the back with zigzag stitch, Gutermann all sew thread.
